REGISTRATION SERVICES: We offer appointments to reduce in-office wait times. Residents with an immediate need to register a vehicle may visit any office location, except for Cheshire, Putnam and Stamford. Residents without an appointment may experience longer wait times, as those with appointments will receive priority service. We will do our best to accommodate everyone. (HOURS: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday - 7:45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m./Thursday - 9:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.)  Before visiting DMV: Select this link to verify that services are available at your desired location.

When to renew

You may renew your license on or as early as six months prior to your license expiration date.

Please note:
Your drive-only license can only be renewed at a DMV hub or branch office and can’t be renewed through DMV express offices, such as AAA or Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union locations. You are not able to renew online.

Step 1: Gather what you’ll need

  • Your drive-only license. If lost, bring one identity document from the drive-only renewal document checklist - English version (PDF) | Spanish version (PDF). If your documents are in a language other than English, they must be translated by a DMV-approved translator.
  • Proof of Connecticut residency: Two different pieces of mail from two different sources to prove your Connecticut residency. Mail must include your name and address, and be dated in accordance with the drive-only renewal document checklist linked above.
  • Name change documents, if applicable: Required if you need to change your name on your license. Please see the drive-only renewal document checklist, linked above, for acceptable name change documents.

Step 2: Make an appointment

Schedule your appointment at a DMV office.


You will not receive your credential during your appointment. Your drive-only license will arrive through the mail within 20 business days. For more on this, please visit Central Issuance.
